United Financial Credit Union Bedding Drive Brings Comfort to Local Children
Residents may not know that there are thousands of local children that lack essential supplies to live a healthy life. They may lack things that most people take for granted, such as food, beds, even pillows or blankets to lay their heads on at night. Going to sleep at night on a cold floor, or maybe an old couch or in a bed with multiple siblings and no blanket to keep warm is the reality for many of the children in the communities around us.
To help change this, United Financial Credit Union supported an organization called Sleep in Heavenly Peace to collect new pillows, pillowcases, waterproof mattress pads, comforters, sheets, and blankets for youth without beds in the surrounding areas. Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a national non-profit organization dedicated to building and delivering top-notch beds to children in need. Their motto is “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town.”
It’s the simple things that most take for granted that make a tremendous positive difference in the lives of many children. Receiving a bed, pillow, pillowcase, or blanket can affect a child emotionally, even help them improve in school by building their confidence. All items collected by United Financial were given to the Sleep in Heavenly Peace local chapter in Auburn that serves Auburn, Bay City, Essexville, Freeland, Kawkawlin, Sanford, Saginaw, and Midland. Thank you to credit union members and staff who donated to this special cause.
Also, over the past two years some of the Credit Union staff have volunteered at various Bed Build Days, where teams of volunteers use tools and materials provided by SHP, and follow the pattern provided, to build twin bunk beds, which can also be used as a single twin. SHP also purchases new twin mattresses and bedding with the cost for a complete bed from start to finish estimated at $250. To volunteer, make a monetary donation, or to request a bed donation for a child in need visit shpbed.org/chapter/mi-auburn. Families, church groups, or business teams can arrange to help volunteer-led build.
